Space Shuttle Discovery

Discovery is NASA's reusable transport spacecraft, the third shuttle. The construction of Discovery was started on August 27, 1979, and on November 9, 1983, the space shuttle was put into operation by NASA. NASA has the designation OV-103 (Orbiter Vehicle — 103). Discovery made its first flight on August 30, 1984, starting from Cape Canaveral. At the time of the last flight, Discovery was the oldest operating shuttle.

The Discovery shuttle is named after one of the two ships on which British Captain James Cook discovered the Hawaiian Islands in the 1770s and explored the coast of Alaska and northwestern Canada.

The Discovery shuttle delivered the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit and participated in two maintenance expeditions.
The Discovery shuttle ended its 27-year career with its last landing on March 9, 2011 at 10:57:17 local time. He descended from orbit, glided to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and landed safely. The shuttle was transferred to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington.
